Sayalonga is located nine kilometres from the coast and 359 metres above sea level. It includes an intricate maze of narrow winding passages.
Saya-longa is a Latin word, which translates as "long tunic." The village has a population of 1,200 and the residents are known as Sayalonguiños.

The church of Santa Catalina (St. Catherine's) stands at the end of the main street and dates back to the sixteenth century. There's also a small chapel with an image of Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of the village. Alongside the main church there is a separate chapel dedicated to San Antón. In here there is a coloured wood carving of the saint, dating from the 18th century.
The cemetery of Sayalonga - cemeterio redondo (round cemetery) - is an important tourist attraction for the village.
