Wow...How this place has grown over the last few years! Cómpeta is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara, some 700 metres above sea level and it is surrounded by National Park.
If you are unfit beware! There are many steep narrow streets winding through the village, some which are not wide enough for cars.

Like every village in the Axarquia Competa hosts many festivals at different times of the year. Noche del Vino (night of the wine) is one of the most popular, usually held around the 15th of August.

The Plaza Almijara is a great place to meet friends or to sit and chill. This square is overlooked by a sixteenth century golden-domed church. Competa's major agricultural crop is the Muscatel grape of which all the locals will agree is the finest in Spain once transformed into the local Competa Wine. A couple of glasses of the stuff could leave you feeling a bit tipsy. There are also plenty of giftshops, supermarkets, restaurants and tapas bars to immerse you further still into the “real Spain” feel. So if you haven’t visited Competa before I suggest you go, just to try some of that wine if for no other reason.
